Fix Your Broken Drawer Knob in 5 Simple Steps

Fix Your Broken Drawer Knob in 5 Simple Steps

A broken drawer knob might seem like a small problem, but it can quickly become annoying. Tugging on a drawer with no handle or a loose knob is frustrating and can even damage the drawer over time. The good news? Replacing a drawer knob is one of the easiest home fixes you can do.

You don’t need special skills or fancy tools. In most cases, the whole job takes less than 10 minutes.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to replace a broken drawer knob step by step.

What You’ll Need

Before you begin, gather a few simple items:

  • A replacement drawer knob

  • Screwdriver (usually Phillips or flathead)

  • The screw that comes with the new knob

  • A ruler (optional)

Most replacement knobs come with screws, but if yours doesn’t, you may need to reuse the old one or buy the correct size.

Step 1: Remove the Old Drawer Knob

Start by opening the drawer so you can access the screw from the inside.

Hold the knob with one hand and use the screwdriver with the other to loosen the screw. Turn the screw counterclockwise until it comes out.

Once the screw is removed, the broken knob should slide right off the front of the drawer.

If the knob broke and part of it is stuck, gently wiggle it loose.

Step 2: Clean the Hole Area

Before installing the new knob, take a moment to check the hole in the drawer.

Make sure there are no wood chips, dust, or loose pieces around the opening. A clean surface helps the new knob sit flat and stay secure.

If needed, wipe the area with a dry cloth.

Step 3: Insert the New Screw

Take the screw that came with your new knob and insert it through the hole from the inside of the drawer.

You should see the screw tip coming out the front of the drawer.

Keep one finger on the screw so it doesn’t fall out while you grab the new knob.

Step 4: Attach the New Drawer Knob

Line up the hole on the back of the new knob with the screw.

Hold the knob in place and tighten the screw from the inside of the drawer using your screwdriver. Turn clockwise until it feels snug.

Be careful not to over-tighten, especially if the drawer is made from softer wood.

Step 5: Test the Drawer

Close the drawer and pull it open a few times using the new knob.

Make sure it feels secure and doesn’t spin or wobble. If it moves, simply tighten the screw a little more.

That’s it—you’ve successfully replaced your drawer knob.

Tips for Choosing a Replacement Drawer Knob

If you’re replacing more than one knob, here are a few quick tips:

  • Match the style to your furniture for a clean look.

  • Measure the screw length so it fits the drawer thickness.

  • Consider upgrading to metal knobs if the old ones were plastic.

Sometimes replacing all the knobs in a room can instantly refresh the look of your furniture.

Final Thoughts

Fixing a broken drawer knob is one of those quick home projects that makes a big difference. With just a screwdriver and a new knob, you can restore your drawer in minutes.

It’s simple, affordable, and a great beginner DIY fix.

Next time a knob breaks or becomes loose, you’ll know exactly what to do.
