A Simple DIY Wall Rack to Store Folding Chairs the Smart Way

A Simple DIY Wall Rack to Store Folding Chairs the Smart Way

Folding lawn chairs are great for backyard barbecues, camping trips, and last-minute guests. The problem? When you’re not using them, they often end up leaning in a corner or piled on the garage floor.

A wall rack is an easy fix. It keeps chairs neat, easy to grab, and out of the way. The best part is that you can build one in about an hour with a few basic tools.

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to build a sturdy wall rack for folding lawn chairs.

Why a Wall Rack Works So Well

Folding chairs are tall and narrow, which makes them perfect for vertical storage. A wall rack:

  • Clears up floor space in your garage or shed

  • Keeps chairs from tipping over

  • Makes it easy to grab one when you need it

  • Takes only a small section of wall

If you have several chairs, you can adjust the width of the rack to hold more.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Most people already have these items at home.

Materials

  • Two 2×4 boards (about 24–30 inches long)

  • One 1×4 board (for the front rail)

  • Wood screws (2½ to 3 inches)

  • Wall anchors or lag screws (depending on wall type)

Tools

  • Drill or driver

  • Stud finder

  • Level

  • Tape measure

  • Saw (if boards need cutting)

Step 1: Find the Right Spot on the Wall

Look for an open wall in your garage, shed, or basement.

A good height is around 4 to 5 feet off the ground. This keeps chairs off the floor but still easy to reach.

Use a stud finder to locate wall studs. Mounting into studs will make the rack much stronger.

Mark the stud locations with a pencil.

Step 2: Build the Side Supports

The side pieces hold the chairs in place.

  1. Take the two 2×4 boards.

  2. Mount them horizontally to the wall, spaced about 18 to 24 inches apart.

  3. Use a level to keep them straight.

  4. Drive screws into the wall studs.

These boards act like small shelves that support the chairs.

Step 3: Attach the Front Rail

The front rail prevents chairs from sliding forward.

  1. Take the 1×4 board.

  2. Attach it across the front of the two 2×4 supports.

  3. Position it about 3 to 4 inches above the bottom boards.

This creates a shallow “pocket” where the chairs will sit.

Step 4: Test the Rack

Now place your folding chairs into the rack.

Stand them vertically with the feet resting on the lower boards and the tops leaning against the wall.

The front rail should keep them from falling out.

If you have several chairs, stack them side by side.

Optional Upgrades

Once the rack is built, you can make a few small upgrades:

Add hooks
Install hooks underneath to hang chair bags or small gear.

Paint or seal the wood
This helps the rack match your garage and protects it from moisture.

Add a second rack
If you have many chairs, install another rack above the first one.

How Many Chairs Can It Hold?

A basic rack like this usually holds 4 to 6 folding chairs, depending on their thickness.

If you need more space, simply extend the length of the boards.

Final Thoughts

Folding chairs are useful, but they can take over your storage space if you don’t have a system. A simple wall rack keeps them organized, easy to reach, and off the floor.

This project is quick, inexpensive, and beginner friendly. With a few boards and basic tools, you can turn an empty section of wall into a neat storage spot that makes your garage feel less cluttered.

If your chairs are always getting in the way, this small DIY project can make a big difference.
