Borderline Brilliant: How to Edge Your Lawn with Brick or Stone

Step 1: Pick Your Materials

Step 2: Plan Your Border

Decide where you want the edge to go. You can line a flower bed, outline a walkway, or frame your whole lawn. Use a garden hose or rope to map out the shape. Once you’re happy with the layout, mark the line using spray paint or a spade.

Step 3: Dig a Trench

Along your marked line, dig a shallow trench that’s about the width of your brick or stone and a few inches deeper than its thickness. This helps your edge stay in place and prevents it from shifting over time.

Fill the trench with a couple of inches of sand or crushed gravel. This gives your bricks or stones a level, solid base to rest on. Use a piece of wood or a small hand tamper to pack it down evenly.

Lay your bricks or stones snugly along the trench, pressing them gently into the base. Check as you go to keep the line straight or follow your curve smoothly. Use a rubber mallet if you need to tap anything into place.

Step 6: Fill the Gaps

Once the edging is in, backfill the sides with soil to help hold everything in place. If you're using brick, you can also sweep sand between the cracks for a finished look. Give the edge a quick rinse with water to settle everything in. A clean edge made of brick or stone can take your lawn from good to great.
