There’s something timeless about a canopy bed. Maybe it’s the cozy, tucked-in feeling or the touch of drama it brings to a room. The good news? You don’t need to spend a fortune to have one. With a basic set of tools, some lumber, and a free weekend, you can build a sturdy, stylish canopy bed frame that fits your space perfectly—and looks way more expensive than it is.
Here’s how to do it.
What You’ll Need
- Wood (dimensions will depend on bed size—see below)
- Wood screws or bolts
- Drill
- Saw (circular or miter saw)
- Measuring tape
- Sandpaper
- Wood glue (optional)
- Paint or stain (optional)
Step 1: Measure Your Mattress
Start with the basics. Measure the length, width, and height of your mattress. Add a couple of inches to each side for wiggle room. That’s the size of your bed frame base. For reference:- Queen size: 60" wide x 80" long
- King size: 76" wide x 80" long
Step 2: Cut the Wood
You’ll need:- 2 long side rails
- 2 short-end rails (head and foot)
- 4 tall posts (around 6–7 feet tall)
- 4 canopy crossbars (same length as side and end rails)
