A warm, crackling fire is one of the best things about cold weather. But if you’re not keeping your chimney clean, that cozy fire could turn into a dangerous hazard. Over time, soot and creosote (a flammable residue) build up inside your chimney, increasing the risk of a house fire. The good news? With a little effort, you can clean your chimney yourself and keep your home safe. Here’s how to do it the right way.
1. Gather Your Supplies
Before you start, make sure you have the right tools. You’ll need:- A chimney brush that fits your flue size
- A sturdy extension rod or rope system
- A flashlight
- A dust mask and safety goggles
- Drop cloths or plastic sheets
- A shop vacuum or broom and dustpan
- A metal bucket for debris
2. Inspect Your Chimney
Start by checking the chimney from the outside. Look for cracks, loose bricks, or any signs of animal nests. Inside, use a flashlight to examine the flue. If you see thick creosote buildup (more than 1/8 inch), it’s time for a cleaning.3. Protect Your Home
Cleaning a chimney can get messy. To catch debris, lay down plastic sheets or drop cloths around your fireplace. Close any doors leading to other rooms and wear a dust mask to avoid breathing in soot.4. Clean from the Top or Bottom
There are two main methods for cleaning a chimney:- Top-Down: If you have roof access and feel comfortable working from heights, attach your chimney brush to an extension rod and lower the flue, scrubbing as you go.
- Bottom-Up: If working from the roof isn’t an option, insert the brush from inside your home and push it up, adding extension rods as needed.
