Brick by Brick: The Easy DIY Fix for Loose Bricks

A loose brick in a wall or walkway might seem like a minor issue, but if left unfixed, it can lead to more significant problems. A shifting brick can create tripping hazards, weaken the structure, or allow water to seep in, causing more damage over time. The good news? You don’t need to be a pro to fix it. With a few tools and a little patience, you can secure that brick back in place like it was never loose in the first place. Here’s how.

What You’ll Need:

  • Chisel or flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer or rubber mallet
  • Wire brush
  • Bucket of water and sponge
  • Ready-mix mortar or mortar mix with sand and cement
  • Trowel or putty knife
  • Gloves

Step 1: Remove the Loose Brick

Using a chisel or flathead screwdriver, carefully pry the loose brick out of place. If it’s stuck, gently tap around it with a hammer or rubber mallet. Be careful not to damage the surrounding bricks.

Step 2: Clean the Area

Once the brick is out, use a wire brush to scrub away any old mortar or debris from the hole and the brick itself. A clean surface helps the new mortar stick better. Wipe down the area with a damp sponge to remove dust.

Step 3: Prepare the Mortar

If you’re using ready-mix mortar, follow the instructions on the package. If mixing your own, combine mortar mix with water until it reaches a thick, paste-like consistency. It should be spreadable but not too runny.

Step 4: Apply the Mortar

Spread a layer of mortar inside the hole where the brick will go. Apply a layer to the sides and bottom of the brick as well. This ensures a snug fit and a strong bond.

Step 5: Replace the Brick

Carefully slide the brick back into place, pressing it firmly into the mortar. Use a trowel or putty knife to smooth out any excess mortar and fill in any gaps around the edges.

Step 6: Let It Set

Allow the mortar to set according to the package instructions—usually around 24 hours. Avoid stepping on or touching the repaired area during this time. Once it’s dry, lightly mist the area with water to help it cure properly.

Fixing a loose brick is an easy DIY project that can save you from costly repairs down the line. With just a little effort, you can restore safety and stability to your wall or walkway. So next time you spot a loose brick, grab your tools and get to work—you’ve got this!
