If your oven has reached the point where it smokes every time you bake, you’re not alone. Over time, spills, grease, and food splatters build up, and before you know it, the smell of burnt cheese is baked into everything you cook. The good news? You don’t need toxic sprays or hours of choking on fumes to get it clean. With a few simple tools and pantry staples, you can get your oven looking—and smelling—fresh again.
1. Gather Your Supplies
You don’t need much to do this job right:
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Warm water
- A small bowl
- A sponge or rag
- A plastic scraper (or an old spatula)
2. Make Your Cleaning Paste
In a small bowl, mix about half a cup of baking soda with a few tablespoons of warm water. Stir until it forms a spreadable paste. You can add a drop of dish soap for extra grease-cutting power.
3. Empty and Wipe
Take out the oven racks and set them aside. Wipe the inside of the oven with a damp cloth to remove loose crumbs. This will make the paste work better.
4. Coat the Oven Interior
Spread the baking soda paste all over the inside of your oven—avoiding the heating elements. Pay extra attention to stubborn spots. Don’t worry if it looks messy; that’s part of the process.
5. Let It Sit Overnight
Close the oven door and let the paste work its magic for at least 12 hours. Baking soda needs time to break down the grease and grime.
6. Wipe and Scrape
After the wait, use a damp sponge to wipe away as much of the dried paste as you can. For stuck-on bits, gently scrape with a plastic tool.
7. The Vinegar Rinse
Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and spritz the inside of the oven. The vinegar will react with any leftover baking soda, creating a light foam that lifts the last of the residue. Wipe clean with a fresh damp cloth.
8. Don’t Forget the Racks
While the paste is doing its work in the oven, soak your racks in a bathtub or large bin filled with warm water and a few tablespoons of dish soap. After a few hours, scrub them with a sponge, rinse, and dry before putting them back.
Deep-cleaning your oven doesn’t have to mean breathing in harsh fumes or buying expensive cleaners. With just baking soda, vinegar, and a little patience, you can get your oven fresh and ready for your next roast or batch of cookies—without the chemical aftertaste. Your food (and your lungs) will thank you.
