History of Sherman Oaks
Sherman Oaks is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California. The neighborhood includes a portion of the Santa Monica Mountains, which gives Sherman Oaks a lower population density than some other areas in Los Angeles.
Its name was derived from Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman, a wealthy land-developer who developed Sherman Oaks. He was a partner of the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company who had bought 47,000 acres of land. He then purchased for himself a 1,000-acres of estate that would become the birthplace of Sherman Oaks. He developed and sold each acre for $780 in 1927.
From quiet, tree-lined streets, Sherman Oaks became one of the first commercial and residential neighborhoods in the 1950’s. Now a lively neighborhood known for its shopping malls that offers endless window-shopping opportunities to everyone.
