Sip in Style: How to Build Your Own Floating Wine Glass Rack

There’s something about hanging wine glasses that just feels classy. Maybe it’s the way the light catches the glass, or maybe it’s how it clears up space on your counter. Either way, a floating wine glass rack brings both function and style to your kitchen or home bar. The best part? You can make one yourself — no fancy tools, no big budget, just a bit of time and effort.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, grab a few simple materials:
  • A piece of wood (size depends on your space — 2 to 3 feet long works for most)
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain or paint
  • Screws and anchors
  • A drill
  • Measuring tape and pencil
  • Metal brackets or wood strips (to hold the glass stems)
Optional: A level, if you want it perfectly straight — and let’s be honest, you probably do.

Step 1: Measure and Mark

Decide where you want the rack to hang — under a cabinet, on the wall, or maybe over your bar area. Measure the space and mark where your screws will go. If you’re attaching it to a wall, ensure you hit the studs or use wall anchors for added support.

Step 2: Prep the Wood

Sand down your wood piece to smooth out any rough edges. Wipe it clean, then stain or paint it to match your style. A dark walnut stain gives a warm, classic look, while white paint can keep things modern and bright. Let it dry completely before proceeding.

Step 3: Attach the Holders

Here’s where it all comes together. If you’re using metal brackets, screw them underneath the wood piece, leaving enough space for the base of each wine glass stem to slide in. If you prefer the all-wood look, screw in thin wood strips about 1 inch apart to create a track for the stems.
Test one glass before tightening everything — it should slide in easily but hang securely.

Step 4: Mount It

Once the rack is ready, mount it in place. Use your drill and level to keep things even. Step back, hang a few glasses, and admire your handiwork.

Step 5: Add a Personal Touch

Want to take it up a notch? Add hooks on the sides for bar tools, or mount a small shelf above it for bottles or decor. A few LED strip lights underneath can make it really pop.
That’s it — you’ve got yourself a sleek, space-saving floating wine glass rack. Not only does it look great, but it also keeps your glassware within easy reach and adds a custom touch to your home. Pour yourself a glass and enjoy that little spark of pride that comes from building something with your own hands.
